Sako Maki's Healthy Commuter Tips
  • Common recommendations for managing stress such as exercise aren't practical for commuting mothers. Set aside at least 15 minutes each day to do something for yourself such as taking a bubble bath, going for a walk or calling a friend.
  • Sleep well and wake up early. A good night's sleep rejuvenates the body. Make it a habit to get enough sleep and to rise early. This allows adequate time for morning routines, including special moments with the family and lessens the strain of a long commute and a long day.
  • Prepare in advance. One of the best ways to combat the stress of commute is to prepare everything the night before. Clothing, briefcases, and lunches for the children can be prepared and packed at night to avoid a morning rush.
  • Share rides to work. Research shows that women in particular tend to benefit from sharing a ride with a buddy.
