Colorectal Screening

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Maryland after heart disease and one in four deaths in Maryland are due to cancer. Our oncology outreach supports the growth of cancer services at both Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital.

Colorectal Screening Program

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the 4th most common cancer among Montgomery County residents? The Colorectal Screening Program offers colorectal health education and screenings to low-income residents of Montgomery County.

SCREEN Program

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital have partnered with the Montgomery County Fire Department to provide a new and rewarding program called Sarris Colorectal Examination and Education Needs (SCREEN).  SCREEN, the only program of its type in the nation, kicked off March 17, 2004 offering hundreds of firefighters colorectal cancer education and free colorectal cancer screenings. Montgomery County Fire Fighters are eligible for free screenings starting at age 40 if not covered by their insurance.

Since 2004, we’ve visited all 33 fire stations in the county and educated over five hundred firefighters.  We look forward to continuing our efforts in the year to come.

Join the fight against colorectal cancer!

We hold colorectal cancer screening events at area churches, senior living facilities, community centers, and workplaces. Health Educators lead these interactive events which come complete with educational materials and displays. To find out about an upcoming event or to set up a screening event for your organization contact Program Coordinators Candice Shoobridge-Moran at (301) 315-3507 or Ivy Bazensky at (301) 315-3147.
