Residential Treatment Center

The Potomac Ridge Residential Treatment Center at Rockville (RTC) provides intermediate-term care for adolescents ages 12-18 who have serious behavioral and emotional problems. Adolescents who are admitted into the program frequently display a pattern of disruptive behavior, which can include aggressive acts toward self and/or others, running away, truancy or school refusal, trauma and abuse. There is also a dual diagnosis component for adolescents whose psychiatric problems are complicated by substance use and/or abuse. The treatment program consists of daily, structured therapies, educational services, and recreational and leisure activities that provide adolescents continuous opportunities to assume responsibility for their behaviors, develop positive coping skills, explore values and learn effective communication techniques. Family involvement in both therapy and activities are expected in order to help the adolescent reach their treatment goals.

Residential Programs

  • Adolescent Services for Girls: The Adolescent Girls Unit at the residential treatment center offers an intensive program for young women who require long-term treatment because their significant behavioral, emotional, and medical needs cannot be met in a community setting. This supportive, dynamic environment affords residents the opportunity to learn and heal from significant life trauma and reconnect with the important people in their lives. In addition to working with the patients, the staff offers families many opportunities to support their loved one during their treatment and rebuild the relationship between the patient and those who are significant to them. These opportunities include family therapy with a licensed therapist, treatment planning with a multidisciplinary team of professionals, and special events designed to reconnect patients with the important people in their lives.
  • The Adolescent Sexual Offender Program (Rockville, MD): The Adolescent Sexual Offenders Program at the residential treatment center provides intensive multidisciplinary treatment for young men who have a well-documented history of sexual aggression. The clinical approach incorporates best practices as determined by current research and clinical opinion from experts in the field. It reflects the philosophy that successful treatment is facilitated best through a collaborative effort among the youth, his family or guardian, the referral agent, the court, community-based treatment providers, and the residential treatment team. An individualized treatment plan is developed to address the youth's overall psychological, educational, medical, social, spiritual, and recreational needs based upon personal assessment and history. The sequential, three-phase program can be completed in approximately one year.
