Awards & Recognition

We've received awards and recognition for our excellence, both by internal and external audiences. We believe quality is a journey, not a destination, and we are continuously pursuing improvement in our care and services.

Here are some of the teams and initiatives we want to recognize for their excellence:

Recognition: 2005 Ernest A. Codman Award
Sponsor: The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
Overview: Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was named a winner of the prestigious 2005 Codman Award by JCAHO. This award recognizes excellence in the use of outcomes measurement by health care organizations to achieve improvements in the quality and safety of health care.
Recognition: 2004 Hospital Quality Alliance Participant
Sponsor: The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
Overview: Hospital Quality Alliance Participant (Formerly National Voluntary Hospital Reporting Initiative) – Designates that a hospital has agreed to submit performance measures for publication on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) website. To date, 1809 hospitals have volunteered to participate -- data for display were available from only 415 of the 1809 hospitals.
Recognition: 2003-2007 Maryland Work-Life Alliance Seal of Approval for Workplace Excellence
Sponsor: Maryland Work-Life Alliance
Overview: Being the best place to work for our employees, volunteers and medical staff is another one of our critical success factors, and our strategic plans include many initiatives to help us achieve this goal.
Recognition: The Medal of Honor for Organ Donation
Sponsor: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
Overview: The HRSA is focusing efforts on reducing the gap between potential organ donors and needy recipients. The principle aim of this effort is to encourage hospitals to achieve and maintain organ donor conversion rates exceeding 75% or higher of eligible donors. HRSA sponsors an Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative. The Medal of Honor for Organ Donation: Recognizes organizations that have raised their donation rates to 75% or higher of eligible donors for the past 12 months.

Teach for the Health of It

We recognize there will be continued need for nurses to care for our community in the future. The nursing shortage in our nation has also affected nursing schools, resulting in a shortage of qualified instructors for nursing schools. Through a grant from the Maryland Governor's Workforce Investment Board and the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Program, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is collaborating with the University of Maryland to provide faculty for clinical rotations in Perinatal, Pediatric and Medical/Surgical Nursing units. Qualified Registered Nurses with Masters degrees in Nursing from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital have been selected to serve as clinical faculty 8-12 hours per week during the school year, while retaining their employee positions at the hospital. In exchange for providing faculty, five nurses from our hospital have been selected to receive $10,000 scholarships to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) . Upon completion of their MSN, each nurse must commit to teach in a nursing program.
