Overview
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at The Shady Grove Adventist Hospital provides the resident with the skills and knowledge required to become a competent pharmacy practitioner.
The program is a twelve-month, postgraduate training experience composed of three major elements:
- Patient Care
- Drug Information and Medication Use Policy
- Clinical Services and Practice Management
The specific program for each resident varies based upon the residents’ goals, interests and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete rotations in core subject areas considered to be essential to the pharmacy practitioner. A broad range of elective rotations is available to permit the resident flexibility in pursuing individual goals.
Additional learning experience aimed at producing a well-rounded pharmacist include the development and completion of a major project related to pharmacy practice, development of oral and written communication skills, patient education, participation in various departmental administrative committees, and practice in various pharmacy areas through out the institution. Upon successful completion of the program, trainees are awarded a residency certificate.
Preceptors
Director of Pharmacy - Eula D. Beasly, PharmD: Dr. Beasley received her PharmD from the University of North Carolina. Her work experience include faculty at Howard University School of Pharmacy, Critical Care Pharmacy Manager at Washington Hospital Center before joining Shady Grove as Director of Pharmacy.
Residency Program Director/Pediatric Clinical Specialist - Mary C. Binghay, PharmD: Dr. Binghay received her BSPharm and PharmD from Howard University and completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. Dr. Binghay worked as a pediatric pharmacist at Georgetown University Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center prior to joining Shady Grove as Pediatric Clinical Specialist.
Clinical Coordinator: Elham Hekmat, PharmD: Dr. Hekmat received her Pharm D at Howard University and worked as a Clinical Pharmacist and BMT Specialist at George Washington University Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital prior to joining Shady Grove as Clinical Coordinator.
Clinical Pharmacist - Nelson Akwo, PharmD, BCPS: Dr. Akwo received his PharmD at Howard University and completed a PGY1 residency at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital prior to joining the staff as Clinical Pharmacist.
Clinical Pharmacist - Sherry Chang, PharmD: Dr. Chang received her PharmD at the University of Maryland and completed a Managed Care Residency and then a one year Fellowship at the University of Maryland. Dr. Chang worked as a clinical pharmacist and Fellowship coordinator at MAMSI prior to joining Shady Grove as Clinical Pharmacist.
Clinical Development Specialist - Emil N. Sidawy, PharmD, MS: Dr. Sidawy earned his BSPharm in Syria and M.S. in Pharmacology at the Medical College of Ohio and PharmD at the University of Maryland. Dr. Sidawy worked as a clinical pharmacist at Northern Virginia Community Hospital in Arlington, VA prior to joining Shady Grove as Clinical Pharmacist.
Clinical Pharmacist - Lori Thomas, R.Ph.: Ms. Thomas received her BSPharm degree from Ferris State College in Big Rapids, MI and has worked as a clinical pharmacist at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Fairfax INOVA Hospital , Kessler Rehabilitation Hospital before returning to Shady Grove as a Clinical Pharmacist.
Clinical Pharmacist - Leah M. Hart-Banks, PharmD: Dr. Banks earned her PharmD degree at the University of Maryland. Dr. Hart-Banks completed a PGY1 residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and a PGY2 Critical Care residency at New York- Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Hart-Banks worked at BayHealth Medical Center and Christiana Care-Wilmington Hospital in Delaware prior to joining Shady Grove as Clinical Pharmacist.

Since 1979, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has served the healthcare needs of residents in Montgomery County, Maryland and surrounding counties. Today Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is a 336-bed, not-for-profit, acute care facility located in Rockville, MD that provides a broad range of health services to the community. Shady Grove is recognized for its excellence in high-risk obstetrical care, cardiac and vascular interventional care, oncology services, orthopedic care and bariatric surgery. Its Emergency Department is the busiest in Montgomery county, and one of the busiest in the State of Maryland with over 129,000 patients visits each year.
Shady Grove Adventist Hospital also has special emphasis on providing health care services for children with the first Pediatric Emergency Departments in Montgomery County. The hospital also operates the only pediatric intensive care unit in the county. For babies who have serious health care needs at birth, Shady Grove has a Level III-B Neonatal Intensive Care Unit providing the highest level of expert medical attention.
Mission Statement
Individuals who complete a pharmacy practice residency shall be highly qualified independent practitioners able to provide pharmaceutical care in various environments. They shall be responsible for drug therapy outcomes as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary health care team. Such pharmacists will be able to develop their own personal plan for professional development. They will be able to teach other professionals and patients about drugs. Pharmacists completing this program will be capable of conducting their practice with a high level of maturity and leadership, and be able to perform practice-related research.
