Two Above Par

It was July 14th, right before teeing off at the golf course, when Bob Tyrrell first felt an uncomfortable pressure on his chest. By the third hole, he knew something was wrong. Bob called his wife Claudia, and their son drove them to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. It was a familiar trip. Just three weeks earlier, Claudia had been a patient here herself.

“Within two to three minutes after I arrived, I had a team of six people working on me," says Bob. The diagnosis: He’d suffered a heart attack caused by a clogged artery. The doctors told him that he needed an angioplasty.

He chose to have the surgery within the hour. "I had what they call a ‘widow’s block,’ the kind of cardiac blockage that makes wives into widows,” he explains. He received a cardiac stent, and “all the pressure went away.”

Claudia could vouch for the care he’d receive. Just a few weeks earlier, she had been a patient here. A survivor of multiple myeloma — a rare cancer that affects the blood cells — her immune system was weakened, and an intestinal inflammation had set in.

Claudia had spent several long weeks at the hospital in June, undergoing treatments and recovering. "The people here make you feel so cared for at every level,” says Claudia. "The extra lengths they go to every day to offer a listening ear, concern, a hand to hold through pain, and being able to smile through it all…it’s a credit to the hospital.”

So when Bob knew something was wrong, they both knew where to turn. “People should know how great the care here is,” says Claudia. “I feel confident coming here.” “I knew I would get good cardiac care,” adds Bob. “This hospital is literally a part of our lives.”
