Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has earned Accreditation with Commendation as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). Shady Grove has a dedicated inpatient oncology unit on 2B, as well as comprehensive outpatient cancer care.
The Cancer Care Navigation team works closely with clinical nurse specialists and physicians to help see patients through cancer screenings, diagnostic biopsies, inpatient surgical options and outpatient therapies and counseling.

Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center at Germantown opened in the spring of 2010. Located just off I-270 and Route 118, this facility improves access and convenience to an important treatment for cancer patients.
More then 60 percent of patients with cancer are treated with radiation therapy, which is used to treat a wide range of cancers including the most prevalent – breast, prostate and lung cancers. These patients receive daily treatments, each lasting 5 – 10 minutes, sometimes for up to eight weeks.

Future Aquilino Cancer Center
Groundbreaking for the new Aquilino Cancer Center will take place in June 2012 and its opening will be celebrated in the fall of 2013.
The Aquilino Cancer Center, a free-standing, outpatient facility, will be located on the campus ofShady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD. The Center will expand access to a full range of coordinated services for cancer patients, delivered by an integrated, compassionate care team.

Highlights of the comprehensive cancer care program offered in Adventist HealthCare’s Aquilino Cancer Center include:
Coordinated Cancer Services & Care
Multidisciplinary teams, including medical, surgical and radiation oncologists; oncology nurses; cancer care nurse navigators; oncology dietitians and social workers, will work together to develop individualized care plans for each patient. With all the cancer specialists located under one roof, care teams have the opportunity to discuss cases throughout the day, in addition to regularly planned multidisciplinary meetings.
The Aquilino Cancer Center will be part of the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center and the Great Seneca Science Corridor in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area, which allows physicians to closely collaborate with local and national research organizations and offers patients an opportunity to participate in clinical trials and research projects.
Comprehensive Cancer Diagnoses & Treatments
The Aquilino Cancer Center will have office space for a wide range of specialists to treat a broad range of cancers that require a multidisciplinary approach to planning and treatment, including:

The Shady Grove Breast Center will be in close proximity, with quality diagnostic services including digital mammography and expert capabilities to diagnose breast cancer.

- State-of-the-art CT simulator for precise radiation treatment planning,
- Linear accelerator to target the cancer tumor with radiation and to preserve the surrounding healthy tissue,
- PET scan of the organs and tissues to support treatment planning,
- Infusion therapies in private, soothing setting overlooking Shady Grove’s Healing Garden.
- High Dose Rate (HDR) Radiation Afterload to deliver direct radiation targeting breast, gynecological, esophageal, skin and thoracic malignancies.
