Cancer Navigation Team

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Cancer Services revolve around the unique needs of cancer patients and aim to ease the demands that come with a cancer diagnosis. The coordinated, personalized approach includes a comprehensive navigation team that consists of skilled and experienced professionals trained to help patients and their loved ones “navigate” the cancer journey. Whether the patient needs resources, dietary counseling, financial support or other services, the cancer navigation team is available to provide support and assistance.

Debra A. Bowen, RN, BSN, OCN

Prostate Cancer Nurse Navigator

As a prostate cancer nurse navigator, Debbie supports patients through the treatment decision process, their chosen course of treatment, its procedures and side effects, and follow up care in the radiation department. She does this via her roles as an educator, counselor, and patient advocate to both patients and their families. She also acts as a liaison between the patient, department of radiation oncology, and urology offices.

Debbie has worked as a radiation oncology nurse for over 20 years receiving several awards for patient care services. She holds a nursing degree from the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from George Mason University. Debbie is an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) with several professional publications and a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, and the local DC Chapter.

Liz Castro

Social Worker

Liz Castro is a Social Worker who assists cancer patients and their families with processing information, insurance and access issues, emotional support, transportation and daily living needs. Liz joined the Adventist HealthCare team in November 2011. She received her undergraduate degree in Business Management from the University of Texas at El Paso. She worked on Capital Hill for a number of years and also for a several non-profit organization where she worked on social policy. She decided to make a career change and received her Master’s of Social Work from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She did her second year internship at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. She found that working with cancer patients and their families was so rewarding that she took a job on the hematology unit upon graduation. She then moved to the Bone Marrow Transplant unit where she worked for an additional 5 years. Liz looks forward to working with the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Cancer Care Navigation Team to help bring comprehensive, compassionate and quality services to cancer patients and their families in this community.

Cynthia Clark, MS, RD, CSO, LDN

Oncology Dietitian

Cynthia Clark is an award-winning Registered Dietitian and a Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO). She has been counseling clients with a variety of nutritional concerns for over fifteen years. She has the knowledge and experience to provide both individualized and group nutrition counseling to clients of all ages and backgrounds. Cynthia assists outpatient cancer patients in understanding the importance of nutrition with a cancer diagnosis and helps them deal with side effects, prevent malnutrition, and reduce risk of recurrence. She enjoys finding creative solutions to help individuals achieve healthy outcomes, motivating them to meet their own nutrition goals and to make positive lifestyle changes. She continually fine-tunes her nutrition counseling skills, sharpens her knowledge of dietetics and develops new programs to encourage the success of patients. Cynthia holds a Master of Science degree in nutrition education from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, earned her degree in dietetics from Arizona State University, and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Maryland. She holds training certifications in Level 1 and Level 2 weight management counseling. She was awarded the Emerging Leaders award by her national professional association, the American Dietetic Association.

Traudi Rose, RN, OCN, MBA

Cancer Care Navigator

Traudi Rose is the Cancer Care Navigator for Shady Grove Adventist and Washington Adventist Hospitals. Traudi is a professional Oncology Certified Nurse, who has broad experience working with persons with cancer. She has worked in the field of oncology in a variety of settings, as a travel nurse. Traudi also holds a Master of Business Administration MBA. Traudi’s goal as cancer care navigator is to be an advocate for all who have cancer, for those who are concerned about cancer, and for the persons caring for individuals with cancer. She is a guide and personal care coach. In this role, she can facilitate access to services, be a source of accurate information, coordinate and connect persons with cancer and their families to financial, transportation, rehabilitation and psychosocial support, which may be difficult to access on one’s own. Services available include those provided by Shady Grove Adventist and Washington Adventist Hospitals, as well as those provided throughout the expanded community.
