Announcement: New General Education Requirements

To apply for the School of Radiography Class of 2008, 15 college credits of general education will be required.  The following are suggested courses:

• Anatomy & Physiology I and II (3 credits each)
• English to include oral communication (3 credits)
• Math to include Algebra (3 credits)
• Computer Applications (3 credits)

Program Mission

Our mission is to educate professionals as Radiologic Technologists, to deliver clinical excellence and quality service to the community.

General Information

Washington Adventist Hospital’s 24-month radiography program combines academic and clinical instruction in diagnostic radiography. In 1997, the school was expanded to include Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

The Curriculum

During your first year as a student, you will learn the basics of radiography and receive supervised clinical instruction in the hospital's radiology department. In the second year, you will attend lectures in advanced subjects and complete clinical assignments in complex radiologic procedures. These assignments give you greater involvement and responsibility in patient care.

In addition, you will have rotations through many different and unique clinical areas and will learn to care for all types of patients in all stages of illness. You will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), heart catheterization, angiography, mammography, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and ultrasound.

Your Future

Prepare For The National Registry and Employment

When you have successfully completed the radiography program, you will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible to take the national registry given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Our program is specially designed to prepare students for the national registry. Since our program began in 1965, more than 250 students have graduated, with an overall pass rate of 97%.

With new educational and technological advancements, career opportunities in radiography are continually expanding. Registered technologists find employment in hospitals, private radiology clinics and a variety of government health agencies. Opportunities are also available in education, research, administration and specialized areas such as CT, MRI, mammography, cardiac catheterization and angiography.

Our affiliation with Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, George Washington University in Washington DC and University of Maryland, enables you to apply up to 60 semester hours of general education credit toward a bachelor's degree. Other colleges and universities may also accept credits from our program.

Facts and Policies

Schedule

School hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students receive eight holidays and four weeks of leave each year.

Because the program is rigorous and time-consuming, we strongly recommend that you do not hold a job while attending.

Accreditation and Licensure

The Washington Adventist Hospital School of Radiography is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The program is also recognized by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and licensed by the Montgomery County government.

Admission Requirements

A limited number of applicants are accepted on the basis of grades, references and personal interviews. To be eligible for admission, you must:

• Have successfully completed high school or equivalent
• Have a minimum grade-point average of 2.5
• Attend an observation day
• Attend a personal interview
• Upon acceptance, pass the hospital’s pre-employment physical and drug screening
